The most sincere prayer I have ever heard is a prayer by Christopher Martin that goes,
“Oh Lord, don’t let me cheat on my girlfriend……
But Lord if you can’t stop me from cheating,
Just don’t let me get caught”
Truth be told, whenever we pray, we want our selfish needs met. Even when we humble ourselves, exalt and praise God, it’s all a show. Just like the guy who calls you Kiongozi, then goes ahead and asks you for a favor.
And there is nothing wrong with being selfish. Only that we coat and wrap our greed with moral and righteous pretensions.
In fact, most of the time when we pray, we do so because we are afraid of what will happen if we don’t pray. We pray to tick a box. To feel good that we have done our part.
Chris Martins’ prayer has been stripped of the verbiage and BS. He prays from the heart so to speak and he is not even being pretentious about his intentions.
Every time I pray, I am asking for things. Things to make me feel good. I am a selfish little brat.
If I were to be honest for once and cut to the chase, my prayers will sound like this: “Lord, I want the fine things of life, so give me lots of money. I am afraid to die so give me good health. I want to be happy so give me whatever I want”.
If we surgically look at our prayers, we would admit that we are traders and are only transacting with God.
And the only cost we are willing to incur is a cheap insincere prayer.
Life is life
