Cain and Abel

A human being on a journey cannot look straight ahead at his own path

Much of his journey is spent looking sideways at his neighbour.

And as he steals glances he notices that his neighbour has something. And like a kid in a toy store, he wants it.

In that moment, when he desires what his neighbour has, things go sideways.

Cain desired Abel’s favour with God

Jacob desired Esau’s birthright

Joseph’s brothers desired his place in their father’s heart.

The issue here is not that we desire what our brother has.

It is that we desire to take our brother’s place.

And since we cannot have two Abels.

I must eliminate you.

Our desire to become the other is the seed of human conflict.
