The prodigal son, soft life and us

Apparently, “prodigal” does not mean “lost” or “returning”? It means wasteful. The story of the prodigal son is the story of the wasteful son.

“.. and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living”

Where we are is exactly where we want to be. This applies to all aspects of our lives: mentally, financially, professionally and even socially. Mostly, our situation is the way it is because it is somehow acceptable to us. We are somehow okay with the way things are.

If we keenly observed our lives, our daily behaviors and choices, we wouldn’t be surprised why our lives turned out the way they did. In fact, we would be surprised that we aren’t in a worse state.

Human beings are very adaptable creatures. We quickly adapt and get used to misery and pain.

After plundering his wealth, the prodigal son adjusted to the low life of a pigsty.

“…and he would gladly have filled his stomach the pods that the swine ate”.

The thing is, there is a difference between saying “I want something” and saying “it would be nice if I had something”. Sometimes we say we want “soft” life, but really what we mean is that it would be nice if we had soft life.  Big difference.

To know our real desires, we should not listen to our mouths. We should watch our daily actions. Our mouths are full of it. We speak too easily. But our habits don’t lie. They tell what we really want.

The prodigal son did not return home because he was remorseful.

He just wanted the soft life.

And he prepared a nice little speech and went to his father.

Life is life
