Supermarket lines

Waiting in line in a supermarket is a delicate political decision, like choosing the right political spouse to win an election.

Typically you start by joining the shortest queue.

But if your line feels like it’s moving slowly, you can either switch to another line or stick with your line for better for worse.

However, once you switch lines, your mind starts to play games with you.

It doesn’t matter how long you stood in the previous line. You don’t move with “waiting points” to the new line. You start from behind.

Also, the line you left becomes your ex. So you keep checking to see its progress.

In fact, you hope your ex-line is slower than your new line, just to comfort yourself that you made the right decision to switch.
